Traditions of a Medieval Britain
Ottery St Mary celebrate the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes night, in a spectacular folk tradition to cleanse the streets of evil. Barrels are rolled in tar and then set alight to be carried from pub to pub around the small town. Being born in Ottery St Marry grants you the licence to take part in this bizarre tradition with younger teams of teenagers carrying lighter small barrels, the event climaxes with the latest of the barrels being carried by a team of men at midnight through the highstreet.
